It's All About The Bed: How To Reduce Allergy And Asthma Symptoms While You Sleep

If your allergies or asthma symptoms have been acting up lately, it's time to take a look at the way you sleep. You might not realise this, but your bedroom environment can really wreak havoc on allergy and asthma symptoms. The first thing you need to do is invest in a good air purifier. That way, you rid your room of the allergens that are affecting your ability to sleep. The next thing you need to do is take a close look at your bed. Your mattress might be the cause of your increased allergy and asthma symptoms. Here are four tips to help you get a good nights' rest.

Start With a New Mattress

If your mattress is more than six years old or so, or you're sleeping on a second-hand mattress, it's time for a replacement. You might not know this, but mattresses should be replaced at least once every six to eight years. The older your mattress is, the more likely it is to be infested with dust mites. Unfortunately, dust mites can exacerbate allergy symptoms and can increase your risk for an asthma attack while you're sleeping. To reduce those risks, invest in a new mattress right away.

Insist on Mattress Certification

If you suffer from allergies or asthma, you need to take care when choosing a new mattress. Before you decide, make sure that the ones you're looking at are certified. This is especially important where allergies or asthma are concerned. For maximum protection while you sleep, you need to choose a mattress that's certified against chemicals such as formaldehyde and heavy metals, and that's low volatile organic compound emissions.

Choose a Good Mattress Cover

If you want to reduce asthma and allergy symptoms and protect your new mattress, don't forget to invest in a quality mattress cover. You might not think that you need to cover a brand-new mattress, but that's not the case. A high thread count mattress cover will help to keep dust mites away from your mattress. Not only that, but the cover will help to protect your mattress from stains. To maximize the benefit of a good mattress cover, be sure to wash it in hot water about once a week.

Don't Forget the Bed Frame

Finally, if you usually place your mattress and box springs directly on the floor, it's time for a change. Placing your mattress on the floor puts it closer to dirt, dust and other allergens. To reduce your allergy and asthma symptoms, be sure to place your mattress and box springs on a bed frame. For more information about mattresses, such as AH beard mattresses, contact a supplier.
